Problem of Practice: Can creating leveled groups and using higher order thinking questions in 4th grade increase math proficiency and/or growth scores?
Project Description: My problem of practice involved looking at 4th grade math data and creating new approaches to teaching 4th grade math to increase student proficiency. After researching data and discussing the data with the teachers, we decided to incorporate two new approaches. First, we will create leveled groups in 4th grade math classes to allow for whole group instruction based on student levels. Second, we will incorporate higher order thinking questions to develop students ability to think critically and discuss math topics.
Outcomes:
Students will have increased engagement, feel the lessons are more suited for their abilities and learning styles, and have increased understanding of taught concepts.
Teachers will create and utilize higher order thinking questions and create data driven student grouping.
